With a grid-tie system you do not need battery storage. If you produce excess power during the day it can be “sold” to the utility and you receive full credit for the power. During the night when your solar energy system is not producing power you can use that credit against the power you purchase from the utility.
However, if you want power when the grid goes down an energy storage system will be needed.

Pricing Batteries add an additional $15,000 – $50,000 to the costs of system depending on the brand and size. There are rebates available from BC Hydro for batteries.
